Keepin' It Real

Well, I took the trip to DC and it was a blast as I had predicted.  The 14+ hour car ride, not so much but the kids did great and we are home now.  I ate far too much and took far too little pictures!!  Such is life!

Here's a little tip for you all who may at some point find yourself in the same position as we are at the moment.  Take your kids and run out of town for a few days and leave your husband to start the job of unpacking/organizing.  It's amazing what will get done!!  There is still a TON to do, but he has made a significant dent and set things up so my mind isn't so overwhelmed.  He is the best!!

While this is mainly a home decor/renovation type blog, I have many interests and things I want to share.  I'm sure you are aware of that by now.  One thing I want to make sure I do is to never make it look like my house is perfect or that things that are hard are easy.  I really believe you need to keep things positive, but with a touch of reality.  So today I'm going to share what my house looks like right now.  That way you have a good indication of where we are at and then I will have before pictures for when things start to look better that we can all look back at to mark the progress.  Who doesn't like a good before and after anyway?

Kitchen:

This space is eons from where it was, but it still has many more steps to take to be where I want it to be.  You will notice my bottom cabinets are blue and my top cabinets have no doors.  They are done, just not on.  The last picture is of the baking center and it is done enough to be functional but still needs, paint, molding, and shelving above.  I can't wait til it's done!

Pantry:

I would always silently chuckle when people would come into this space and when learning I was going to use it for my pantry say something like, "I hope you have a lot of stuff, cause you're gonna need it to fill this space."  Uhm, clearly not a problem.  What woman, who does any amount of cooking and entertaining, have you ever heard complain that their pantry was too big?  None!

1/2 Bath and Mudroom:

This space had quite a bit of "underwear" done and I'm excited to finally have the pedestal sink installed safe and sound.  I bought it months ago on Craiglist and cringed any time it was moved.  The mudroom needs major help since it drives me nuts.  It'll happen!

Living Room:

I guarantee almost nothing you see in these pictures will stay where it is.  This room will take quite a turn in it's style from today.  It's important to me that this room is right since it's the first thing you see in the house and will set the mood for the rest of the house.  I have a crazy idea in my head for over the new mantle (that will go in soon).  We shall see if I can pull it off and still like it.

Family Room Loft:

This room has literally been the dumping ground.  It holds so many things that need to be hung but I just don't know where yet.  To be truthful, since I'm not up there very often I forget about it.  But, I have no doubt once it's done it will be one of my favorite spaces so I'm going to do a lot to be sure it's cozy and inviting!

Craft Room Loft:

This is the room opposite the family room and it will be the craft/homework/office area.  Hubby got the IKEA shelf put together while we were gone so now I can really start to organize in there.  Perhaps tonight!

Master Bedroom:

Don't you just LOVE the orange?!?!?  This is a room I actually have never revealed.  I will document about it tomorrow.  I was totally kidding about the orange, BTW!

Basement Storage:

I know storage is not super exciting, but I'm excited that my awesome husband got this little project mostly complete while we were gone!  It freed up a lot of extra space in the basement to finally get that area free to be organized and functioning.  I know it's a lot of food.  It's a Mormon thing!  I highly recommend you jump on this bandwagon.  There is nothing like being able to "shop" in your own home for items.  It has saved me on many occasion.

These are not all the rooms or projects we have going on around the house, but you get the idea.  A home is suppose to evolve, just like all of us.  I hope you never get discouraged when you walk into someone's house that you really like and think you'll never get there.  Believe me, she didn't get there overnight.  A house should reflect you and that takes time and planning.  Be patient with yourself and your house.  You'll get there and I know you'll love the result as long as it's authentically you.

Happy decorating!!
